MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM (resemble warts)
Molluscum Contagiosum
Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral skin infection that is very similar to common warts caused by the Papova skin virus. Molluscum contagiosum is caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus that is part of the poxvirus family. The virus is contagious through direct contact. The virus can be spread by sexual contact and the virus can spread on an individual through scratching and rubbing.
General appearance is single or multiple raised, pearl-like bumps (papules) on the skin. These papules will have a central portion that is white and waxy and are less painful than warts, which can be very tender.
Various treatments exist ie: pulse dye lasers, freezing, acid therapy, and antacid medication, but Molluscum Contagiosum lesions are more stubborn than common warts. Surgically shaving/scraping the lesions has the best chance to eliminate the problem. This procedure is easily performed in the office with a local anesthetic.
