Most foot and ankle surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Almost any foot or ankle surgery can be done with just a local anesthetic: however, combining sedation with the local anesthetic creates a very pleasant and comfortable surgical experience.
In the pre-operative area of a hospital, an IV is started allowing painless access to all medications. Pre-operative medications will calm and relax the patient and often make them feel happy and euphoric going into surgery.
Once in the operating room, the anesthesiologist will gently put the patient to sleep with medications through the IV. These medications comfortably allow a local anesthetic to be given into the foot or ankle, numbing the area to pain or discomfort. After the operation is over, additional local anesthetic is given to prolong the numbness to the surgical site. Because the circulation to the head and brain are about 5 times greater than the circulation to the foot and ankle; it take 4-5 times longer for the blood flow to wash away the local anesthetic in the foot compared to the mouth. Many patients have stated that their feet stayed numb and pain-free up to 36 hours after surgery. Many patients relate their surgical experience to their yearly colonoscopy, a piece of cake.
