The BUNION SLIDE A Minimal Incision Surgery,tri-plane, 3D correction (transverse plane, sagittal plane, and the frontal plane) is an improved version of the “minimal incision” SWISS COMPRESSION TECHNIQUE BUNIOECTOMY popularized by the late, Dr. Neal Frankel. Dr. Forni worked with Dr. Neal Frankel for many years and frequently performs this newly improved outpatient procedure to correct mild, moderate, and arthritic bunion deformities.
A small cosmetic incision is made on the side of the foot, out of plain sight. A simple directional osteotomy, bone incision, is made near the anatomical neck of the first metatarsal, well behind the first metatarsal-phalangeal joint. After completing the osteotomy, the bone and the joint are slid into their best anatomical functioning position and stabilized with standard internal fixation.
In most cases, a combination of directions is used to slide the great toe joint into the best functioning position, allowing for EASY 3-D TRI-PLANE CORRECTION (transverse plane, sagital plane, and the frontal plane). Because no two bunion deformities are exactly the same, the BUNION SLIDE has the versatility to allow the metatarsal bone to be: lengthened, shortened, elevated, lowered, rotated, and/or moved closer to the other metatarsals, depending on the pre-op measurements of that bunion deformity. The procedure takes less than an hour and is done on an outpatient basis.
After surgery, a specially tailored surgical bandage controls the weight distribution at the surgical site, allowing early walking. Through a physiological process called DYNAMIZATION, bone healing is stimulated with ambulation. Many patients may run and jump after 4 to 8 weeks. Dr. Forni is double board-certified and has surgically corrected 0ver a thousand bunion deformities.
